Helpful information for the wearer.
Wear a t-shirt and shorts to stop irritation and soak up plenty of sweat!
Only wear full costume for maximum 15 or 20 mins at a time.
If outside try to stand in the shade. It can get too hot in the sun.
Always have an assistant close by to navigate / protect the mascot.
The assistant can announce when the mascot needs to "have a rest"
Children can identify with this concept and will let you disappear.
Make sure no children see you take off the head as this destroys the illusion.
Take a break every 20 mins and remove the head to let the wearer cool down.
Drink plenty of water (no alcohol) during breaks to replenish lost fluids.
Minimising the fear factor.
If possible, approach the crowd from a distance. If children see you coming they will be less frightened than if you suddenly appear in front of them. ie, at home, instead of ringing the front door bell to announce your arrival, children could watch from the window as you approach the house.
Appropriate music for the character can be a useful aid.
No sudden movements!
Don't approach frightened children. After a while they will usually come around; especially if you have some treats to hand out!
Don't talk. It is unlikely that your voice will sound like the character, You may be recognised and children don't expect the character to talk. Let the assistant speak for you and you can use appropriate actions. *See below.
Once the costume is on, take a moment to work out where the eyes, ears and mouth are. These are useful when gesturing. Also be sure the character "looks" at the children. This may involve standing slightly bent forward.
Some actions to use:
Waving
Nodding
Shaking hands
Blowing Kisses
Cuddles!
Playing "peek-a-boo" then Giggling with 1 hand over mouth and the other on tummy while jiggling up and down.
